CRANBROOK, BC - When checking out potential destinations this summer, be sure to bookmark Cranbrook, BC.
A hearty city in the East Kootenays, Cranbrook is prepped and ready for the onslaught of RVs and trailer motorcades rolling into town via Highway 3 from the east and Highway 93/95 from the north in the coming weeks.
The city itself is in the southeast corner of British Columbia, and borders Alberta and the U.S. It has an airport catering to visitors and area residents year round, and is conveniently located right off Highway 3 running east/west. It’s also surrounded by provincial campgrounds and is a destination for many people.
Charity Car Show
The city keeps busy, hosting several top-tier events during the summer, one of which is the Brothers Insurance Car Show, July 19 to 20, 2013. This charity event supports the Kootenay Child Development Centre, and has an action-packed schedule.
Expect to see some sweet rides ranging from cars, trucks, and motorcycles. To keep the crowd entertained, Blues Brothers Too will be on hand all day Saturday busting out some tunes, keeping the crowd hyped on the second day of the event.
Calling all cowboys and girls
Next, and a staple on the Cranbrook summer event schedule, is the 27th Annual Cranbrook Pro Rodeo, Aug. 16 to 18, 2013. This event is going to please all the cowgirls and cowboys out there, having a solid roster of talent on hand to show their skills in the arena.
Trick riders, steer riding, and a stocked beer garden and concessions will keep your belly full and your thirst quenched while being entertained with some heart-stopping rides to be witnessed throughout the weekend.
Saturday night will feature a dance, so rodeo attendees better shine your boots and pack your best, shiny, studded digs so you can unleash some two-stepping fun ($10 tickets at the door).
While mom and dad recoup after ripping up the dance floor Saturday night, Sunday is Children’s Day, where they can have a bit of a breather as the kids will be catered to with a day packed with fun activities.
Tickets for the rodeo are available at the gate and in advance at Alpine Toyota, Top Crop Farm, and Hill Billy Hardwear starting at $18 (adult).
Dancing, eating and everything in between
The fun doesn’t stop there; Cranbrook literally has something for everyone. The city is home to a pool of talented artists, ranging from the visual arts to the theatre arts.
The Artrageous Gallery in the city boasts an open art exhibition, featuring a large body of work of a variety of mediums throughout the summer.
The Key City Theatre in the city is also a must-check-out venue. It is a performing arts and cultural centre with some impressive live acts making it part of their tour circuit, one of which being the highly acclaimed brother duo The Proclaimers, performing on Aug. 27, 2013.
Every Saturday there's the the city’s Farmer’s market, loaded with locally grown delicious treats and artisan crafts, sure to please the palette of the most intense foodie and collector. Follow up a day at the market by catching some live music at the outdoor music event, Summer Sounds in Rotary Park.
