Cranbrook is a Winter Bliztville for Family Day Weekend
By JOANNE ELVES
Cranbrook, B.C. is ramping up the wow factor on Family Day Weekend with the new CBK-X Winter Blitzville. Not only is it a great basecamp for the long weekend to cram in your favourite winter sports like skiing and boarding, but now the city is offering an evening of spectacular demonstrations of athleticism, horsepower, and fireworks. And when we say fireworks – we mean Ka-BOOM!
Cranbrook is CBK-X Bliztville for one night only
Make sure you are on Baker Street in downtown Cranbrook by 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 16 to help get the party started. By the sounds of it, this is going to be a fast-paced, high octane event.
“We wanted to create a festival that could combine a few things you can’t normally do in the summer and one thing that came to mind is – fireworks,” says Isaac Hockley, event organizer. “Canada Day fireworks are usually banned in this region to protect our forests, so having a festival with fireworks and pyrotechnics in the middle of winter is perfect.”
With the winter sun setting early, the backdrop of a dark sky will only enhance the brilliant display.
Front and foremost are the athletes that will perform on the jumps and terrain park on Baker Street. There will be demonstrations by freestyle snowmobilers hitting massive jumps that propel them sky-high. Flips, twists and spins all happen before they safely land the roaring machine.
The highlight will be watching B.C.’s own Brett Turcotte, world champion and double gold medallist at the 2018 Winter X-Games as he performs astounding stunts and flips through the air on his snowmobile. Seriously, this guy does backflips while clinging to his snowmobile and then lands it under a shower of blasting pyro.
Bring Your Game
Bring your snowboard and enter the rail jam. Lay down your best tricks and see if you walk away with the cash prize. Three judges will be on hand to score your moves at the terrain park built specifically for the festival.
Festival Fun
It’s not just adrenaline junkies jumping over your head and scrapping down rails. There’ll be a big stage with performances by a DJ and a band, firestick dancers, entertainment, food trucks, beer, prizes and lots of giveaways provided by the community. Don’t forget to stick around for the grand finale. Remember we said there’d be fireworks? Plug your ears kids - it’s going to get loud. Maxim Fireworks will light up the sky with a massive firework display along the sightline of the water tower at the end of Baker Street.
Yeah…Cranbrook will go Ka-BOOM!
