World Ski & Snowboard Festival Returns this year ‘armchair mode’

Posted:

The World Ski and Snowboard Festival (WSSF) is returning this April with the usual celebration of sport, music and artists from around the world but with a different format. It’s all digital. You can experience the entire three-week virtual festival April 16 – 30 2021, from the comforts of your living room.

“Though we cannot bring the world to Whistler this year, we are thrilled to be bringing Whistler to you," says the WSSF team. “We will be showcasing the talents of athletes and artists from around the world, through a virtual festival for this 25-year celebration. WSSF was created as a way to celebrate all that is mountain culture and this year the festival encapsulates the resiliency of the industry.”

Armchair entertainment

The WSSF just announced that SkiiTour will be providing the upbeat tunes that they are known to provide. And Whistlers favourite local band, The Hairfarmers will be playing their “West Coast Ski Bum” tunes including everything from reggae to folk to county and rock. Other local entertainers are lining up to bring on the good times including Bangers & Mash, DJ Foxy Moron and TyMetal. So, sit back, and enjoy!

Roll em!

You know all that video and all those epic pictures you took anywhere in the world? It’s time to dust off all your creations from the last ten years and enter the best of the best in the WSSF Rough Cuts Photo & Video Competition. Snowsport crews from around the world are challenged to put together a 2–5-minute film showcasing awesome skiing, snowboarding or any epic snow sports.

There are two categories for winning cash prizes. Film shot within the Sea to Sky area can compete to win $5000 cash. Global entries compete for $1000 cash and the “Key to WSSF for 2022” which includes accommodations, dining certificates, tours and more from the partners from the Whistler Resorts Municipality.

Break out the canvas

WSSF isn’t forgetting the artists. The Whip Sheet Top Sheet Competition lets you choose the canvas for your entry. In partnership with Foon Skis and Prior Snowboards, the Whip Sheet Competition challenges artists to submit their original top sheet designs to be judged by the world. Winning artists will receive a custom board or pair of skis with – get this – the winning art as the design! AND the design will be made available as custom orders on Foon Skis.

Here are the deets

Eager artists, photographers and videographers should go to wssf.com for more information on how to submit art, film or video. Your best rough cuts need to be submitted by April 10, 2021 and your whip sheet art is due April 20, 2021.

The rest of us should sit back in the armchair with a pint of craft beer and join the WSSF virtually on Friday, April 16, 23, and 30 from 6-8 p.m. Mountain Standard Time to catch Sky Streams live. Everyone is invited to cast votes to pick their favourite top sheet designs and to launch videos into the finals. Don’t forget, anyone can enter the competition so before you put the feet up on the ottoman, dig out that video or draft up the epic design and submit it. Anyone can enter and that means anyone can win!
