Vernon Winter Carnival
It's time to channel your inner cowpoke and celebrate the 61st year of the Vernon Winter Carnival for 10 days from Feb. 5-14.
The whole town gets into the spirit of this 10-day carnival that marks its 61st year. The Wild West is this year's theme and it's a chance for people of all ages to creatively celebrate more than 100 winter events while at the same time adhering to Covid protocols.
Many of the events - from snowmobile scavenger hunts to chili cookoffs - are virtual or socially distanced, but that doesn't mean everyone in your family bubble can't have a blast and party like it's 1899.
Here is a list of some of the many free and ticketed happenings around Vernon, some family-friendly and some adult-only.
Feb. 5, all day: Snowmobile Scavenger Hunt - Head to the SilverStar snowmobile area and rev up your engines for this free and fun, day-long event. Before you leave home, don't forget to print out your scavenger hunt map here.
Feb. 5, Drive-Thru Ice Park – Hop in your car and head with the family to Vernon's Polson Park. Creative ice sculpturists will transform the park into a magical winter wonderland of Wild West-themed ice sculptures. Cost is $10 per car at various times throughout the day. Get your tickets here.
Various dates: Virtual Outlaw Whiskey Experience – Put on a good movie to keep the kids busy while you enjoy an hour-long virtual whiskey tasting from the comfort of your home. You can pick up your tasting kits ($60) from the Okanagan Spirits Distillery in advance. Then get ready to learn how craft spirits are made and sip and savour a tasting of four premium whiskeys. Various dates, Chili Cookoff: It's not the Wild West without a bowl of chili. Various participating Vernon restaurants invite you to pop by and buy your bowl of their signature chili. Various dates, Virtual Vino with VPAG: Gather a group of friends online for a fun and popular event at the Vernon Public Art Gallery. Dabble in your pre-ordered paint and canvas kit, sip a pinot noir or pinot grigio and follow along on a painting project with a professional artist.
